Nebraska Car Crashes on the Rise Due to Adverse Weather
Winter weather conditions are among the leading causes of serious car accidents in the state of Nebraska. Research by the Nebraska Department of Transportation reveals that each year, there is an average of more than 100 crashes on the first day of snow across the state. This is a marked increase over the average number of vehicle crashes on other days of the year.
Adverse weather conditions, such as rain, snow and sleet, reduce visibility on the roads and make it more difficult to control a vehicle. Unless drivers take deliberate action to slow down and drive cautiously, they are putting themselves, their passengers and fellow road users at risk.

Wet Roads Contribute to Several Crashes
NBC Nebraska reports that there were several crashes this weekend on Nebraska’s wet roads. Local police say they were out in full force to assist car accident victims across the state as wet winter weather took hold.
A pickup truck and a van crashed around 5 p.m., and the truck spun off the road into a ditch. Earlier that day, a sedan spun on ice that layered the street. There were no serious injuries in either of these crashes.
Just a few hours earlier, two vehicles crashed on Highway 34 when one driver crossed the center line. The vehicles collided head-on, resulting in several minor injuries.
In the most serious crash of the day, a large semi-truck crashed in the left lane of Interstate 80, causing the road to close for a period of time. Police responded to the scene and treated the driver. Law enforcement is still investigating the cause of the accident.
There were a number of other crashes in addition to these. Police are urging motorists to remain cautious and to keep a safe following distance—particularly when the weather conditions deteriorate.
Multi-Vehicle Crash Closes Highway
Omaha.com reports that a multi-vehicle crash closed Highway 77. Police say they closed the roadway while they investigated the accident’s cause.
The crash was in the early hours of the afternoon near the intersection with Nebraska Highway 91. A mini-van and a semi-truck crashed, and the mini-van sustained significant damage. Police are still investigating the cause, and no further information on the crash is currently available.
