Crash alert: Volunteer fatally struck while working on JFK Freeway
OMAHA, NE – Authorities say a man working as a volunteer was fatally struck by a vehicle on an Omaha highway Thursday afternoon.
According to a report by WOWT, the incident happened at 1:28 p.m. on the JFK Freeway north of Chandler Road. The victim was identified as 70-year-old John Holcomb, a volunteer with the motorist assist program.
The Nebraska State Patrol said Holcomb was working to remove debris from the roadway when he was hit. The incident remains under investigation.
The NSP said Holcomb had worked in volunteer service with the Metro Area Motorist Assist Program since 2014.
Highway 75 southbound at Q Street was shut down while authorities responded to the scene. Drivers were advised to avoid the area.
