Crash alert: Semi trailer fire causes major delays on I-80
HAMITON COUNTY, NE – Drivers faced big backups in Hamilton County Wednesday morning after a semi trailer carrying potatoes became engulfed in flames.
According to KOLN, the driver noticed smoke coming from the trailer after a back tire popped. When he pulled over to the shoulder and disconnected the trailer, he saw it catch fire.
Authorities responded and reduced I-80 traffic to a single lane between mile marker 316 and 321, resulting in traffic delays that stretched for miles.
It took about a half hour for firefighters to extinguish the blaze. It may have been sparked by a tire malfunction, a trooper said.
