Crash alert: Suspect arrested in Grand Island hit-and-run that injured teen
GRAND ISLAND, NE – Police say a suspect is under arrest in connection with a hit-and-run accident that injured a teenager in Grand Island.
According to the Grand Island Independent, 21-year-old Luis Alejandro Ruiz was arrested at his home Wednesday. He was charged with leaving the scene of an injury accident without rendering aid and willful reckless driving.
Police said Ruiz was driving a Chrysler 300 that was involved in a three-car accident Wednesday at about 6:30 a.m. in the intersection of Anderson and Locust Streets. A 13-year-old Grand Island girl who was a passenger in one of the cars was critically injured and paralyzed from the chest down as a result of the crash.
Authorities said tips and information from the public helped them locate Ruiz, after they announced they were searching for a driver who fled the scene. Investigators are looking into the possibility that Ruiz was under the influence at the time of the accident.
