Crash alert: Suspected drunk driver charged in deadly Omaha car accident
OMAHA, NE – Police say a suspected drunk driver is under arrest in connection with a fatal crash in Omaha early Friday morning.
In a news release, the Omaha Police Department said 28-year-old John Caillau was booked into Douglas County Correctional Center on one count of felony motor vehicle homicide.
Officers responded to the scene at West Dodge Street and North 90th Road shortly after 4 a.m. Investigators determined that Caillau was driving a Chevy Equinox eastbound when he entered the intersection at the same time as an eastbound Toyota Camry, and the vehicles sideswiped each other.
The Toyota slid and crashed into a concrete wall at a bus stop before ending up on its roof. The Chevy went over a median, hit a sign, and also landed on its roof on Dodge Street.
The Toyota driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and was identified as 63-year-old James Yungbluth of Waterloo, Nebraska. Caillau was seriously injured and taken to Bergan Mercy ER.
Police said Caillau was intoxicated at the time of the wreck.
The intersection was closed for nearly five hours for the crash investigation.
