Crash alert: Driver arrested for DUI following collision on Highway 30
CHEYENNE COUNTY, NE – An alleged drunk driver was arrested following a collision in Cheyenne County Monday afternoon, News Channel Nebraska reports.
The crash involved a sedan and a semi-truck on Highway 30 near Point of Rocks. Investigators said Kevin Schmid was driving the sedan west on Highway 30 when he entered the eastbound lane while rounding a curve.
The driver of an eastbound semi veered into the westbound lane to avoid colliding with the sedan, according to police. The vehicles sideswiped each other and both went into a ditch, where they hit an embankment. The incident caused the truck to catch fire.
The two drivers both refused transport to a hospital. Police said a breathalyzer test indicated that Schmid’s blood alcohol content was nearly three times the legal limit. Schmid, a Wyoming resident, was placed under arrest on a charge of driving under the influence..
