Crash alert: Driver dead following collision with school bus near Eppley Airfield in Omaha
OMAHA, NE – Omaha police said a driver was killed when his car was involved in a crash with a school bus on Monday morning.
In a news release, police said officers responded to Abbott Drive and East Locust Street near Eppley Airfield shortly before 7 a.m. Witnesses told investigators that a school bus going west on East Locust Street ran a red light and struck an Acura that was headed north on Abbott Drive.
The Acura driver was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified as 59-year-old James A. McCoy of Council Bluffs, Iowa. The bus driver, 43-year-old Kevin Downing of Council Bluffs, was taken to Nebraska Medicine with complaints of pain. No students were on board the bus at the time of the incident.
Abbott Drive was shut down for about three hours, and a detour for airport traffic was put in place. Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
The school bus is owned by First Student of Council Bluffs.
