Crash Alert: Semi-truck driver dies after crashing into lake in Grand Island
GRAND ISLAND, NE – A semi-truck driver died after crashing into a lake at the Mormon Island State Recreation Area on Thursday, according to WOWT.
Verlin Hunt, 69, was driving a semi-truck east on I-80 when he crossed all lanes of traffic and went down a steep embankment into the lake around 5:40 p.m.
First responders performed life-saving measures on Hunt before pronouncing him dead at the scene.
Authorities do not believe impairment was a factor in the wreck.
An accident reconstruction team is investigating the incident.
Diesel fuel was released into the lake due to the collision. An environmental cleanup team is working to clean the lake.
