Crash alert: Man impaled by rod in workplace accident

FIRTH, NE –  A utility worker from Lincoln was injured when he was impaled by a rod in a workplace accident near Firth last week, according to WOWT and the Associated Press.

Roger Kempf, a worker for the Nebraska Public Power District, was clearing brush from under power lines last Thursday at about 2:45 p.m. when the incident occurred.

Authorities said a co-worker was operating machinery with a front-mounted disk grinder when the grinder hit a piece of rebar from a concealed electric fence post.  The post was launched about 60 yards at high velocity, and Kempf was impaled in the lower back with a 2-foot-long steel rod.

The Lincoln Journal-Star reports Kempf, 46, underwent surgery to have the rebar removed and is in stable condition.
