Local Woman Who Fled the Scene of a Car Crash Arrested for DUI
A 19-year-old woman in Omaha was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after she ran a red light and caused an accident. Passengers in three other vehicles sustained injuries.
The Omaha World-Herald reports that after the crash occurred, the suspect climbed into another vehicle and fled the scene – only to return an hour later, when she was promptly arrested by police. She faces charges for driving under the influence and feeling the scene of an accident, among other offenses.
Accidents like these have led to Nebraska adopting a 24/7 sobriety program for serial DUI offenders. According to the sobriety management system Intoxi Track, the program has been widely successful in reducing cases of drunk driving across the country.

How Can I Avoid a Drunk Driving Crash?
Nebraska’s 24/7 sobriety program was introduced to combat a serious problem. Nearly one-third of all road deaths are linked to the use of alcohol or drugs, according to data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Nebraska is no exception: The state sees far too many people killed every year in accidents involving intoxicated drivers.
For people aged 21 and older, the legal BAC limit is 0.08. With that much alcohol in the system, a driver’s ability to perceive danger and react accordingly is severely limited.
Next time you take to the road, keep these 13 signs of unsafe driving in mind. They might help you recognize a drunk or impaired driver before it is too late:
- Accelerating too quickly;
- Following too closely;
- Weaving across lanes;
- Driving on or too close to the curb;
- Coming close to striking objects or other vehicles;
- Sudden stopping or erratic braking;
- Signalling that is not consistent with driving actions;
- Delayed or dangerous responding to traffic signals;
- Driving along the centerline;
- Driving with headlights turned off in the dark;
- Swerving dangerously without cause;
- Driving too fast or too slowly for conditions;
- And driving into oncoming traffic or on the wrong side of the road.
